Gregory Janson was a ZZT enthusiast who decided to write a similar program. He released Megazeux in 1994. It was more powerful than ZZT, but not as quick or simple to use. Others have added to Janson's code over the years, and you can find current information and downloads at DigitalMZX and SourceForge.
I started work on a Megazeux game in 1999, a platform adventure called Out of the Glade. I will probably never finish the game now, as I used its core elements for my 2003 game seiklus, which I created using Game Maker by Mark Overmars.
