When and how did you discover Game Maker?
In the summer of 2000 I was desperately searching for some sort of freeware game authoring tool. I typed in the keywords "game maker" and voila, the rest is history.
Have you used any other game creation programs?
GameDev. I experimented with it several times to see what I could come up
with. I wanted to see if I could get something up and running as quickly as
I could with Game Maker. GameDev just didn't jive with me very well, as I
found it to be more tedious (in some ways) then it should have been - Game
Maker is far more organized and easy to use.
What games or other projects have you made with (or for) Game Maker?
Bubble Escape
What are your favorite Game Maker games?
Seiklus (made by
yourself)
Ore No Ryomi (sp?) restaurant simulator (
Mr. Chubigans)
Reflexion (Juho Pohjonen)
Cool Dog (Gabor de Mooij)
What are your favorite games NOT made with Game Maker?
Megaman, Zelda, Metroid, Donkey Kong Country, Banjo-Kazooie, Resident Evil...
What advice would you give new Game Maker users or those who would like to improve?
Take your time and don't rush into things. Learn the basics first. Get good really good at making simple things. Once you master the simple and basic, you can put them together to make bigger things.
What elements of a game are most important to you and why?
Control and Gameplay are the two biggest factors to a game's success.
"Why control a game which is uncontrollable?"
"Without fun in gameplay, there is no game, and there is no play."
Why do you make games? What is your primary inspiration, motivation, or both?
A) To prove that 2D games are still fun.
B) To put my ideas in motion.
Do you have other artistic pursuits other than game development? If so, what?
Nope. It's all about games for me. ;-)
Any other comments?
Good interview. Very thorough and well thought out.
