When and how did you discover Game Maker?
A friend of mine got it from his big brother, and I found out about it. I was really excited, I have always liked creating things.
Have you used any other game creation programs?
I have used RPG-Maker2000 to make some games, and it was pretty good. I finished two games with it. But Game Maker is the best.
What games or other projects have you made with (or for) Game Maker?
Destroyermech
What are your favorite Game Maker games?
What are your favorite games NOT made with Game Maker?
Most of the Sonic games, Megaswiv, Truxton, Rocket Knight Adventures, Descent 1, 2 and 3, Carmageddon 2 and 3, Force commander, Red alert 2, Starcraft.
What advice would you give new Game Maker users or those who would like to improve?
Dont give up, dont think you can make a good game the day after you downloaded Game Maker, and intelligence, experience and creativity is much, much more than knowledge. Patience is really important too.
What elements of a game are most important to you and why?
I like games that are long and have some kind of story. Some games does not need a good story though, and the story probably my weakest point in game making. If the story is good you want to play more to find out how the story ends. This may affect the replay value though.
A game should be properly tested and bug-free. If a game is full of bugs it may make the game much easier or much harder, and it can get boring or frustrating.
The game should be easy to control, so you wont spend hours trying to find out how to control the main character.
The graphics and sounds must not be bad, but then there are many kinds of "bad". For example, a really old game like jumpman or jetpack may have "bad" graphics and sounds, but I like those games and their graphics does not disturb the gameplay.
I dont think a game gets better just because it is 3D and has fancy graphics and sounds, this is why I mostly dont like the new commercial games.
Why do you make games? What is your primary inspiration, motivation, or both?
I make games because I love creating. Before I got Game Maker I always searched for games with easy to use level editors, which are pretty rare. I also want to show that I am good at something, and I usually show my games to my friends when they come to my place.
Most people who have seen my games seem to like them pretty much, and this makes me want to make better and better games. I think I will keep on making games when I get older, but I dont think I will make a living of it.
I like results, and when I get older I can look back at my creations.
Do you have other artistic pursuits other than game development? If so, what?
I work on my site now and then, at
http://www.freewebs.com/oddwarg/
And I make music that can be found there. I usually just go to some random forums and sites and stuff when on the internet.
Any other comments?
I dont use Game Maker 5 and I never will. GM4.3 has (close to) everything I want. I still do not know if GM6 will interest me though.
