River and Gulf   |    Uxmal
Uxmal is an ancient Maja city in the Yucatán peninsula.

When Spanish explorers asked the Maya natives the name of the area, they responded, "I don't understand what you're saying." This apparently sounds like "Yucatán," and so that became the name of the area.

The Mesoamerican ballgame was played with a solid rubber ball, which the players were allowed to touch only with their hips and forearms. It seems that one goal was enough to win, and the losing team was sacrificed. (Both teams were made up of captives.)
